Introduction
In fact, we have worked on this project two times. The first time was in 2011/2012 when we created the first airport website. At that time, the web design and development were our responsibility. The biggest challenge was to deliver departure and arrival timetables with an alert system that pulls information from the airport's internal IT system.
After several years (in 2021), the airport marketing department asked us for web development assistance. They had already created the website's UX and UI but they needed developers to go online with the project. We were happy to help.
The starting point for the project
The current website for Wrocław Airport was delivered in 2021 and was created in cooperation with several companies. Lama Media was responsible for implementing and now maintains the site. The web design was provided by another company.
Taking over somebody's work is never an easy job. We started with a deep analysis of the design provided. We found that there was no design for mobile devices and also several crucial screen views were missing. We decided to execute a quick design phase on our side in order to make sure that the developers would receive all the elements that they needed for the programming phase. The entire development phase took us three months. After that, the Airport Marketing Team was able to enter the beta version of the website and fill the content in.
The goals and perspective at the start of the project:
- RWD (Responsive Web Design) implementation
- Multi-language internationalisation (PL, EN, DE)
- WCAG 2.0 standard implementation
- Departure and arrival timetables with an alert system that pulls information from the airport's internal IT system
- Integration with the airport's internal IT system SkyScanner API integration
- Parking lot booking system integration
- Executive Lounge and Fast Track reservation forms
- Instagram integration
- Facebook Messenger integration
- Chatbot implementation
- cross-browser/platform support
The Approach
The main technologies used for this project were PHP, JS, and WordPress. We knew that the website should be the main source of information for passengers, so we focused on the departure and arrival timetables, with an alert system that pulls information from the airport's internal IT system.
The most advanced elements of the site are its integration with the SkyScanner application as well as the parking lot booking system integration. SkyScanner enables us to display a map with all possible destinations.
This visual representation of the flights includes a search bar with a list of search results. Users can enter the name of the country or the name of the city and have a quick price overview.
Other features and integrations such as Executive Lounge and Fast Track reservation forms, Instagram integration, Facebook Messenger integration, and chatbot implementation, were rather smaller challenges. Thanks to the Instagram API, we were able to fetch and display (on the homepage) the latest Instagram posts (pulled from the Airport’s official account). Facebook Messenger and chatbot enable quick communication through the website, which is always convenient for passengers, in case of any questions.

Information about flights
This small feature is made especially for passengers who are just about to depart from Wroclaw. They can select their flight from the Departures table and follow the information about the flight or sign up for notifications. The user can be automatically notified about a new flight status via the Messenger app (powered by Facebook). The user can also "save the flight", which means that the alert bar will stick to the top of the website.

Search for flights
Thanks to the SkyScanner API integration we are able to display the approximate price for each flight. Users can choose the destination of their interest from the map or from the list. They can also filter the search results by: destination name, departure/return date, class of the flight, and the number of adults/children. There is also an option to see direct flights only.

Travel destinations
(a guide for Polish users)
This is a fine online guidebook covering all accessible direct flights that are served by the Wroclaw airport. Destinations are divided into several categories, such as active sightseeing, long weekend, or relaxing on the beach. The integration with SkyScanner makes it possible to display approximate pricing for each flight.
Results
We are happy that we can help people travel all over the world. 315,193 passengers visited Wroclaw airport in June 2022. June is definitely the start of the high season. We can say this with certainty by looking at the website's statistics. The website was visited 583.6K times by 252.1K unique visitors (only in June 2022). The average time spent on the website was 13:35 minutes. The average user visited circa 2.37 subpages during each session. The numbers speak for themselves.
