Introduction
The Olga Tokarczuk Foundation website has been conceived to present a wide range of cultural and social-oriented projects held by Foundation representatives. They are directed at various groups of people, such as writers, kids, translators, or residents of Wrocław.
We were responsible for the web design and web development for both entities: the core Foundation's website (powered by WordPress) and the Translations and Editions Archive which is based on our bespoke Product Information Management system. In this case, the PIM system enables the public access to the digital catalogue of all publications written by Olga Tokarczuk. Moreover, there is also a partition that enables searching all articles (press or scientific) and translations that have been created for the works of Olga Tokarczuk.
The starting point for the project
In 2021 we were asked to create the Foundation's website and digital archive of works, articles and translations. Both projects required us to work from scratch. At the very beginning of our cooperation, we had the chance to see the process of brand creation, which was executed by another company, so our web design was fully inspired by the Foundation's logo, benchmarks and inspirations, discussed and chosen during the marketing workshops.
The goal was to make a stylish modern-look website that would correspond with the Foundation headquarter’s history and interior design, and nature as well. At the time, the Foundation was about to open its headquarters in a house that was built in the 1920s – currently known as the Karpowicz villa. The website was announced and presented during the grand opening event.
The goals and perspective at the start of the project:
- clean web design
- new copywriting and new content architecture
- easy UX and features that would be useful for visitors
- accessibility and a good page speed rate
- cross-browser / platform support
- multi-language internationalisation, especially for the digital repository of articles, editions and translations
- easy dashboard that would enable adding/editing records to the digital repository of articles, editions and translations
The Approach
When it comes to the Foundation's website, the main technologies used for this project are PHP, JS and WordPress. We knew that the website should be the main source of information about upcoming and past cultural events associated with the Foundation. So, we focused on: news, events calendar, and project presentation.
Together with the client, we generated the most important modules and features and we delivered them with the help of ACF (Advanced Custom Fields plugin). This way each subpage template has a bunch of modules and features ready to use.
Building a digital repository of articles, editions and translations was a more complex task. The initial database was prepared as an XML file.
Our goal was to regroup all that information and translate it into code/programming language. The main technologies used for this part of the project are: Java Script and HTML. Our client wanted this system to grow easily and effortlessly in the future. Therefore we decided to deliver a dashboard where existing content can be edited and new ones can be added. Also, there is an option for a big bulk information update, which can be done by a CSV file upload. The system allows searching and filtering the records by keywords, authors and language. The records are divided into more than 40 languages, so worldwide users can easily select those publications, translations or editions that are relevant to them.

Projects
Projects, programmes, debates, and contests are the core of the Foundation's activity. We decided to give them a proper presentation. You can find a subpage with a list of on-going and archived projects. Each individual project subpage contains an optional form that enables users to express their willingness to take part in the project or contest.

Homepage opening
We decided on quite an unusual slider that combines two separate photos with a short paragraph of text. This feature is fully customizable. The content managers can add as many "slides" as they want. This way there is an option to highlight the figure of the writer, the foundation's historical headquarters building and the newest novel. These three pieces form the central part of the homepage.

Mountains of Literature Festival
The Landing Page of the unique literary and social event that has taken place in, among other places, Nowa Ruda, Ludwikowice Kłodzkie, Radków, Sarny Castle, Książ Castle and Sokołowsko. Developed in just two weeks, the subpage is customizable and can also be used for the next edition of the festival.
Results
The mission of the Foundation is to change the world through storytelling. We are glad to help the Olga Tokarczuk Foundation’s team in achieving their mission. As a result of our cooperation, 16,000 people took part in the Mountains of Literature Festival that lasted from 13 to 21 July 2022. The highest peak of the traffic on the website was noted on July 14th (3200 sessions in one day). We can proudly state that in June, the website was visited more than 43,100 times by 11,400 unique visitors.
